Progress Through PeopleIn the 1980s Time Magazine ran a cover story calling Miami "Paradise Lost." Recognizing an opportunity to help turn around a city’s image, Tom Murphy assembled a coalition of business, government and academic partners to use customer service training in a novel way. He created "Miami Nice.""Miami Nice" earned national attention for Miami and earned Tom recognition as one of Miami’s "People to Watch." That program launched Tom on a career as a business consultant to help organizations increase performance by focusing on the development of their people. Beginning in 1986, he worked with American Express to adapt his "USA Nice" training model to other cities (Atlanta Ambassadors, Seattle Ambassadors, Spirit of Boston, and more) and to thirteen islands in the Caribbean (Caribbean Nice..) His national award-winning "Airport Ambassador" program grew from that. It was his knowledge of aviation, and the special access given to him by aviation officials, that allowed Tom to write a story of his colleagues’ courage on 9/11, called "Reclaiming the Sky: 9/11 and the Untold Story of the Men and Women Who Kept America Flying."
